Navy Taffeta Rose Dress

A sleeveless dress in deep navy taffeta, with a rounded neckline, a fitted bodice, and a pleated skirt held out from the body. Small fabric roses are set in a row at the waist, made from the same cloth as the dress.

Self-fabric roses are a quieter form of ornament than applied trim or beading. Because they are cut from the dress itself they carry the same colour and sheen, so they read as part of the garment rather than as decoration added to it, and there is nothing that can catch or come away during a long day.

Navy is the most underrated colour in children's occasionwear. It carries the formality of black without its severity on a young child, it does not show the marks that pale colours do, and in taffeta it catches light cleanly enough to have real depth in photographs.
