Red Jacquard Dress

A sleeveless dress in red jacquard, with a rounded neckline, a fitted bodice, and a skirt that curves gently outward and back in toward the hem. The roses are woven into the cloth rather than printed onto it, in red against a darker ground.

Woven pattern behaves differently from print. It carries light and shadow within the fabric itself, so the roses shift as the child moves and gain depth in photographs where a flat print would read as a single tone. It is also why the skirt holds its shape without help: jacquard has real body.

Red at the holidays is the strongest convention there is, and the easiest to overdo. A deep red carrying its own woven pattern reads as considered where a flat scarlet reads as costume, and it photographs far better under the warm, low light of December interiors.
